Vocational Education and Career Training

  By David Pannen, Education Journalist

Vocational Education refers to the hands-on experience intended to prepare students for real life job activities and responsibilities. Vocation and Career Training are programs dedicated to teaching students specific skills and practices associated with particular occupations. For the majority of these vocations, the abilities and dexterities needed on the job are exclusively taught in trade schools. Vocational Education usually involves training with technology such as mechanical or computer-based systems. Other trade programs include occupations such as message therapy and cosmetology. Essentially, trade schools offer special courses designed to maximize the student’s potential within their field of study. To students who are interested in a trade industry, vocational Education is a credible means to a successful career.

The benefits associated with vocational Education are abundant. Primary, financial returns are a student’s main concern and compared to how long vocational courses take to complete, the gains from career training are great. According to the National Association of Educational Statistics (NCES), in 2004, the average American with an Associate’s degree or certificate made $8,065 more than those with high school diplomas. Financial justification is not the only reason to consider trade school as an appropriate educational choice though. Another clear advantage to trade schools is the short time in which the actual programs can be completed. Accelerated programs increase the productivity of students, allowing them to receive their certificate without a four-year scholastic commitment. Once a student has received their certificate, they are immediately ready for employment within the industry of their expertise. An effective learning technique within vocational Education is an apprenticeship. Apprenticeships benefit students with on-the-job training as well as valuable skills learned only through hands-on activities. Students involved in apprenticeships have an obvious advantage because they gain excellent experience along with the knowledge integrated throughout a desired industry.

Trade schools and career training have become very popular within the last decade. As the country develops and grows in population, occupations associated with trade schools will logically increase in demand. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 1999 to 2005, the total number of workers with Associate’s degrees increased nationally by approximately 8,661,000 workers. With such a significant increase, trade schools are competitively offering students extensive training and quality programs aimed to assist students into the industry of their choice. Train today to succeed tomorrow!"
