Criminal justice can be loosely divided into three separate but overlapping categories - law enforcement, the court system and the correction system. No matter what the position, anyone interested in criminal justice as a career path should enjoy working with people and the public and have a high regard for rules and regulations. Detectives and Criminal Investigators Conduct investigations related to suspected violations of Federal, State, or local laws to prevent or solve crimes. Managers of Police and Detectives Supervise and coordinate activities of members of police force. Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Enforce law and order in rural or unincorporated districts or serve legal processes of courts. May patrol courthouse, guard court or grand jury, or escort defendants. Government Workers A very broad category that includes judicial system, education, law enforcement, public transportation, and other public-service and federally-funded careers. Legal and Protective Services jobs include Law Enforcement, Corrections, Fire Service, Private Security and Emergency Medical Services. Chief of Police Supervise and coordinate activities of members of police force. Law Public Safety and Security Focuses on planning, managing, and providing judicial, legal, and public safety services for the fire protection and criminal justice systems including professional and technical support services.
