A Chef or culinarian: supervises, coordinates, and participates in activities of cooks and other kitchen personnel engaged in preparing and cooking foods in hotel, restaurant, cafeteria, or other establishment; estimates food consumption, and requisitions or purchases foodstuffs; receives and examines foodstuffs and supplies to ensure quality and quantity meet established standards and specifications; selects and develops recipes based on type of food to be prepared and applying personal knowledge and experience in food preparation; supervises personnel engaged in preparing, cooking, and serving meats, sauces, vegetables, soups, and other foods; cooks or otherwise prepares food according to recipe; cuts, trims, and bones meats and poultry for cooking; portions cooked foods, or gives instructions to workers as to size of portions and methods of garnishing; and carves meats

Culinary This branch of the food service industry often has three distinct types of employees -- chefs, cooks, and food preparation workers. Food Service Managers Plan, direct, or coordinate activities of an organization or department that serves food and beverages. Cooks, Fast Food Prepare and cook food in a fast food restaurant with a limited menu. Duties of the cooks are limited to preparation of a few basic items and normally involve operating large-volume single-purpose cooking equipment. Cooks, Restaurant Prepare, season, and cook soups, meats, vegetables, desserts, or other foodstuffs in restaurants. May order supplies, keep records and accounts, price items on menu, or plan menu. Food Preparation Workers Perform a variety of food preparation duties other than cooking, such as preparing cold foods and shellfish, slicing meat, and brewing coffee or tea. Government Workers A very broad category that includes judicial system, education, law enforcement, public transportation, and other public-service and federally-funded careers. Wholesale and Retail Sales Retail/Wholesale Sales and Service is comprised of courses and/or programs relating to planning, managing and performing wholesaling and retailing services and related marketing and distribution support services including merchandise/product management and promotion. Sample occupations include Sales Associate, Interior Designer, Marketing Director, Buyer, Real Estate Broker, and Customer Service Representative. Bakers Mix and bake ingredients according to recipes to produce breads, rolls, cookies, cakes, pies, pastries, or other baked goods. Manufacturing Baker Mix and bake ingredients according to recipes to produce breads, rolls, cookies, cakes, pies, pastries, or other baked goods in a manufacturing environment. Cooks, Institution and Cafeteria Prepare and cook large quantities of food for institutions, such as schools, hospitals, or cafeterias. Cooks, Short Order Prepare and cook to order a variety of foods that require only a short preparation time. May take orders from customers and serve patrons at counters or tables.
